ZAGREB, 22 January 2021 – Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Civil Protection Staff, Tomo Medved and his associates visited the municipality of Donji Kukuruzari and the villages of Pecki and Sibić on Friday which were affected by last month’s 6.2 magnitude earthquake.

Medved talked to the locals and volunteers about the current course of assistance and what may be missing. He also visited places where food and other necessities are collected and distributed.

In Donji Kukuruzari, Medved talked with experts about the consequences of the earthquake and the subsequent opening of sinkholes in the ground in the area of ​​Mečenčani. 

So far, 51 openings have been observed, of which 13 new ones have been detected in recent days, mostly on agricultural land.

The deepest post-earthquake hole is about 15 meters deep and is in the immediate vicinity of a family home, experts from the Zagreb Geological Institute and the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering reported.

Experts emphasised that it is important not to take any action in the next six months regarding the remediation of openings in the ground, especially those near houses.

“We will monitor the situation and if danger is noticed, especially in the case of endangering people’s lives, we will react in a timely manner,” said Medved.
